Little Mercies

Von Bieker’s latest single, Little Mercies is a product of the pandemic, written and recorded at home during quarantine.

Lyrically, Little Mercies celebrates the little things that get us through hard times. A warm smile. A cold beer. A loyal dog. New chords on an old guitar.

As all music venues closed early in the pandemic, Von Bieker turned to weekly livestream concerts to connect with fans and friends, often inviting guest artists to join him. One evening the chosen theme was “little mercies”. While building a setlist the morning before the show, the sun spilled through the front window and brought a new song with it. As Von Bieker’s dog Carl basked in the rays (featured in the single artwork), he recorded the first demo of what would become Little Mercies.

Von Bieker used this strange times to work in new ways, exploring new sounds and home recording techniques and working remotely with Edmonton drummer Brendan Lyons to lay down the groove. What emerged is a little mercy in and of itself – a song of hope in the face of loss to soothe the self-isolated soul.
