With this latest single, Von Bieker dives headlong into the Country and
Western waters he's dipped his toes in on previous tracks like Move With Me.
If You Want Me To Come Home, I Will, rose up on a lonely drive along the Yellowhead – a prairie highway Von Bieker traveled from Edmonton, Alberta to a gig in Saskatchewan. Along the road he found himself haunted by the outlaw country catalogs of artists like Merle Hagard and George Jones.
A chorus emerged and Von Bieker turned off the car radio to hum it over and over until he could pull off into the next town he passed – Mannville, Alberta.
In the shadow of the sign for the Mannville Motel, Von Bieker finished this ode to false bravado and independence. The song sings a story of stubborn, bull- headed astrangement only Country music could capture.
If You Want Me To Come Home, I Will became a quick sing-along favourite at solo shows and with Soft March, an alt-country outfit Von Bieker was part of at the time.
Soft March recorded the track at Edmonton's Velveteen Music, then soon disbanded, leaving the recording's future in question even before a global pandemic changed everyones plans.
Eventually, the recording was resurrected and handed over to Leeroy Stagger – an artist admired by Von Bieker and Soft March who gets old-school country and old prairie highways. Before the track was finished, Stagger's studio was flooded. This really is a country song.
Now, five years after that lonely highway drive, the song comes home.
lyrics
Faded red grain elevator blocking out the sky
Was a good idea once but all ideas die
Some dreams just fade away but others they are killed
If you want me to come home I will
If you want me to come home I will
Shoulders on the Yellowhead are painted prairie white
Snow will still be glowing in the middle of the night (I'll be)
Drowning out your memory with alcohol and pills
If you want me to come home I will
If you want me to come home I will
Say you love me
And I'll turn around
It's been so long since I heard that sound
Say you need me
And I'll be there
Drawn like a magnet to the hope that you still care
It's easy to get lost beneath this endless bone-gray sky
I could tell you where I've been but I can't tell you why
How can I pay my dues when I can't even pay my bills
If you want me to come home I will
If you want me to come home I will
See the glow-green numbers searching on the radio
Reception's getting worse the further that I go
Old news on the AM crackling and shrill
If you want me to come home I will
If you want me to come home I will
Say you love me
And I'll turn around
It's been so long since I heard that sound
Say you need me
And I'll be there
Drawn like a magnet to the hope that you still care
Maybe it's just weakness keeps me tethered to my home
Maybe there's nobility in standing out alone
Like that silver silo keeping watch atop the hill
If you want me to come home I will
If you want me to come home I will
